Business Internet & Enterprise Connectivity in Italy

Italy has an enterprise connectivity market that looks straightforward on paper and isn't. Last-mile delivery outside the major cities takes longer than buyers expect. Building access and internal infrastructure in older Italian properties creates wayleave-equivalent delays that rarely appear in a carrier's headline lead time. And most international providers quoting Italy are working through Telecom Italia's wholesale infrastructure, which means they're subject to the same delivery timelines without the escalation relationships to compress them. We've delivered across mainland Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia. The coverage exists. The difference is knowing which carriers to use in which locations.
The Connectivity Landscape in Italy
Sparkle (Telecom Italia Sparkle) is Italy's primary international carrier — the international arm of TIM Group with a global Tier 1 network, data centres in Palermo, Athens, Istanbul, and Milan, and co-ownership of major submarine cables. Sparkle is our primary recommendation for capacity services in Italy and for global capacity requirements routed via Italy's submarine cable infrastructure. For enterprises with international traffic requirements, Sparkle's network extends well beyond Italy.
Retelit is the strongest independent Italian carrier for enterprise connectivity — a 47,000km proprietary fibre network across 38 data centres nationally. In October 2025, Retelit completed the acquisition of BT Italia, integrating BT's Italian enterprise client base. That's significant: if you're a current BT Italy client, your contract is now a Retelit contract. The integration creates a decision point worth reviewing.
Colt maintains a proprietary network of nearly 5,000km in Italy, with presence in Turin, Milan, Rome, Genoa, and Bologna. For on-net delivery in these cities, Colt's pre-validated engineering and SDN platform gives us the same delivery reliability we achieve across the rest of Europe. We're Colt's number one global partner — that relationship extends fully into Italy.
Zayo activated a new 400GE-enabled IP PoP at Namex Rome in 2025, strengthening connectivity to Southern Europe and North Africa. euNetworks provides financial services latency connectivity into Italian data centres. Milan hosts 40+ unique carriers as of September 2025 — the city is Italy's primary enterprise connectivity hub.
Sicily isn't an edge case for us. Palermo is a strategic Mediterranean gateway — Sparkle's Sicily Hub Data Centre is one of the most important submarine cable landing points in the region, connecting Europe to Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. We deliver into Sicily. Sardinia too — Data Center Gallura in Olbia lands three submarine cables and hosts the SSIX (Sicilia & Sardegna Internet Exchange).
What We Deliver in Italy
We start with your requirement, not a carrier list. Single circuit or dual? Active/active or active/passive resilience? Does your compliance team need KMZ files — which narrows the carrier shortlist on its own? What's your lead time? Once we understand that, we'll recommend the right 3–5 options for your specific address across mainland Italy, Sicily, or Sardinia. Our Nexus platform covers 2.5 billion buildings globally — we know what's serviceable before we make a recommendation. We've delivered here for professional services, financial services, media, and legal clients — services ranging from office DIA to 100G capacity circuits.
The KMZ issue is real in Italy as it is across Europe. Telecom Italia's wholesale channel will not provide KMZ files for access circuits. For Italian enterprises operating under financial services regulation, or multinationals with GDPR data sovereignty requirements, we provide KMZ documentation through carriers that support it.
For multinational clients connecting Italy with Germany or France as part of a wider European programme, we manage the full circuit estate under one commercial relationship — same SLAs, same escalation path, same technical standards — rather than separate incumbent relationships in each country.
The Challenge in Italy
Italy's last-mile delivery outside major cities is the hidden risk most buyers don't price into their timelines. Building access in Italian commercial properties — particularly older stock in Rome's historic centre or regional cities — adds weeks that don't show up in a carrier's quoted lead time. We've learned to ask the right questions before quoting a timeline, not after.
The Retelit acquisition of BT Italia in October 2025 is still bedding in. Current BT Italy clients should review their contracts now — the service continuity is there, but the commercial terms and escalation paths changed on completion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which carriers do you recommend in Italy?
We don't work from a fixed panel. We qualify your requirement first — service type, location across Italy, resilience model, KMZ requirements, lead time — then recommend the right 3–5 carriers for your specific address. Sparkle, Retelit and Colt are among the options in Italy, but carrier selection is driven by your requirement and whether you're on mainland, in Sicily, or Sardinia.
BT Italy was acquired by Retelit — what does that mean for our contract?
If you were a BT Italia client, your contract transferred to Retelit on October 1, 2025. Service continuity is maintained but commercial terms and escalation paths changed. Worth reviewing your contract in detail.
Can you deliver in Sicily and Sardinia?
Yes — we cover mainland Italy, Sicily (including Palermo's Sparkle Hub), and Sardinia (including Data Center Gallura in Olbia). Delivery timelines outside mainland cities take longer; we'll tell you the realistic number upfront.
How long does delivery take in Italy?
Milan, Rome, Turin: 35 working days via Colt on-net. Other cities and last-mile off-net builds: add time, quoted per location. Sicily and Sardinia: available, longer lead times.
Can you provide KMZ files for compliance?
Yes. Telecom Italia wholesale will not. We work through carriers that support KMZ provision.
